Milky Way and Andromeda Galaxies headed for mega-merger
The Milky Way Galaxy- home to our sun and planet earth- is headed for a mega-merger with it's cosmic neighbor the Andromeda Galaxy and the results will not be pretty.
A new video simulation shows how gravity will draw the two galaxies near each other and then force ths systems of gases, stars and huge rocks to mix, crash and turn into a new galaxy altogether. Fortunately for us, this is another 5 billion or years off, but still. Earth could survive the merger, but our galactic address will change, as will the night sky.
